Jaw Fracture
Horses can suffer severe jaw fractures if they bite down on something and become stuck. Since horses are flight animals, they will panic and attempt to free themselves, which can result in a broken jaw.
Thorough examination is required to assess the damage, but in most cases, these fractures can be reduced and stabilized with the use of a cerclage wire.
The jaw will fully heal in 6-8 weeks. In more complex fractures, a CT scan will be performed first to create a tailored treatment plan.
