Summer brings warmth and sunshine, but it also brings ticks
Deze 6-jarige pony werd naar Equitom Namur doorverwezen met een complexe, comminutieve en zeer instabiele breuk van een van haar benen. De fractuur was al enkele dagen oud en bracht een groot risico op complicaties met zich mee.
🔎 Fracturen van het pijpbeen zijn bijzonder delicaat: het bot is nauwelijks omgeven door zacht weefsel, waardoor de huid erg kwetsbaar is en het infectierisico aanzienlijk toeneemt, zelfs zonder open wonde. In dit geval werd osteosynthese als te risicovol beschouwd vanwege de instabiliteit en het hoge infectierisico.
🩻 Na overleg met de eigenaar besloot ons team om over te gaan tot amputatie. Het onderste lidmaat werd net onder het spronggewricht geamputeerd, zodat er later een prothese kon geplaatst worden: mogelijk dankzij het kleine formaat van de pony. Het bot werd glad afgezaagd, waarna de buigpezen, de strekpees en het tussenpeesligament werden gebruikt om een zachte kussenstructuur aan het uiteinde van de stomp te creëren, en de huid werd er netjes overheen gehecht.
🦴 Er werden vervolgens pinnen in het scheenbeen geplaatst, in combinatie met een gipsverband dat dienstdoet als tijdelijke prothese. Doordat het gewicht uitsluitend op de pinnen rust, krijgt de stomp de kans om volledig te genezen zonder druk, waardoor necrose en complicaties vermeden worden.
Het herstelproces is volop aan de gang, met als doel een definitieve prothese op termijn. De weg is nog lang, maar deze kleine vechter heeft nu al ongelofelijke moed getoond en ons team zal er elke stap van de weg voor haar zijn. 💙
This 6-year-old mare was referred to Equitom with a complex, comminuted, and highly unstable fracture of one of her limbs. The bone injury had already been present for several days and carried a high risk of complications.
🔎 Cannon bone fractures are particularly challenging: the bone is poorly protected by soft tissues, making the skin vulnerable and significantly increasing the risk of infection—even without an open wound. In this case, osteosynthesis would have been too risky due to the high risk of infection and lack of stability.
🩻 After discussion with the owner, our team opted for an amputation. The distal limb was amputated just below the hock, allowing for the possibility of a prosthesis later on—something feasible thanks to the mare’s small size. The bone was cut smoothly, and the tendons (flexors, suspensory ligament, and extensor) were used to create a cushion at the stump, before the skin was sutured over it.
🦴Pins were then inserted into the tibia and combined with a cast acting as a temporary prosthesis. Since the weight rests solely on the pins, the stump can heal without pressure—avoiding necrosis and complications.
The healing process is now underway, with a definitive prosthesis as the next goal. The road ahead will be long, but this little warrior has already shown incredible courage—and our team will be right there, every step of the way. 💙
